I don’t know too much about this case. Clearly less than most of my friends on the internet (based in the harsh things I have read in the last 12 hours.)
I just read this article.
But the thing that chaps me about America’s reaction to all of this is the complete buy-in to media spin.
Casey Anthony may have killed her daughter, but it is completely reasonable that she may not have. There are three people in the entire world that were present at the time to know for sure. Casey, potentially her father, and the late Caylee. Other than that, there is no true way to tell. The forensic evidence was simply not there, so the defense had no option but to go based in motive, mostly based on how the mother is reacting. Not everyone winces the same way at a hot iron.
The defense presented photos of the mother partying. This was a three year ordeal. You could kill my entire family and my new puppy, and amidst the years and years and years of mourning I would have to go through, you don’t think there would be one moment where I would want to forget about it for a second? A photo may be worth a thousand words, but it only captures a moment.
I’m not taking sides, I totally think it’s possible/probable that Casey simply could afford a great lawyer who knew how to play the system, or that she covered her tracks incredibly well, but then again, I wasn’t in the room when the case was stated. I think it’s super weird that she didn’t report the missing child until 31 days after the child’s death. But I wasn’t there when the Grandfather gave his testimony, either. Apparently she expressed tears of joy after the verdict was read. Would you be a little relieved if after a three year case, during which an entire nation is screaming guilty at your face through the internet, TV, and radio, you were told you were not going to spend 20+ years in prison after losing your daughter? Regardless of whether or not this woman killed her daughter, Caylee is gone forever, and she has to live with it. Be it in a cell, or in her home. Her every move will be concisely watched from now on. Every time she smiles, a nation will think “heartless”. But the seven women (yes, it was a female majority jury) and five men thought there was reasonable enough doubt to drop her of her first degree murder charge.
Does anyone know the statistics on how many women in nations under threat of governmental warfare on civilians have lost a child, just or unjust? Any idea how many children go missing even in America each day? What makes this woman’s case so special? The media. And we bought it, hook, line and sinker.
You can think what you want, but I certainly do not wish Dexter upon her. She has her own burden to bear, guilty or not.
